Our History

CAPIC, founded in the early 1960’s as the Canadian Association for Production and Inventory Control, is now Region VIII of APICS (the American Production and Inventory Control Society). A not-for-profit and volunteer-based organization, APICS has positioned chapters in virtually every major Canadian municipality, from Halifax to Vancouver, and throughout the USA and Mexico. APICS’ Mission is “to be the Premier provider and global leader in individual and organizational education, standards of excellence and information in integrated resource management”. Its Vision is “to inspire individuals and organizations toward lifelong learning and to enhance individual and organizational success.”  

In 1990, the Durham Region Chapter of APICS was chartered, to better service members and industry in this area. A regular program of professional development dinner meetings was established, featuring well-known speakers from logistics and related professions.  
The Chapter has built upon the successes of its early years, and now provides an array of interesting and instructive events. Among its offerings are in-house and public education programs in Production and Inventory Management, Fundamentals of Materials and Operations Management, and Integrated Resource Management. Training in specific supply chain topics such as Cycle Counting, J.I.T., Lean, and ERP are also available. Over the years, APICS has partnered with a number of Durham businesses to offer public courses at their facilities as a means of exposing their employees to a broader group-learning environment.  

APICS confers the prestigious CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) and CIRM (Certified in Integrated Resource Management) professional designations to qualified practitioners, who must demonstrate mastery of the body of knowledge by passing a series of examinations.  

John Skelton, Past President of the Durham APICS Chapter and a member since 1995, successfully achieved CPIM status in 1999, and holds this in addition to his Masters Degree in Economics. A strong advocate of the value of lifelong learning, Skelton feels that APICS has the right range of products to offer businesses and individuals who see a need to enhance their performance in the area of supply chain management (SCM). “A mentor of mine pointed me in the direction of APICS some years ago. Having become passionate about my career in SCM, I felt the need to strengthen my specific knowledge in the field. Pursuit of my CPIM designation through APICS exam preparation courses turned out to fit my needs precisely! I have no doubt that my experience with APICS has translated directly to improved supply chain performance and efficiency at my employer. It has also opened many doors in my professional enrichment and earnings growth that otherwise might have remained shut.”  

 
APICS has also developed a strong partnership with Durham College, through the establishment of an Affiliated Student Chapter (ASC). Through this relationship, students in Durham College’s Operations Management Program are exposed to real-world SCM challenges. Assistance with respect to career initiation and development is also provided. APICS supported the construction of the Integrated Manufacturing Centre at U.O.I.T. And in May 2004, the Durham APICS Chapter awarded the first J. Clark Weddell Scholarship to a deserving student.

Durham APICS Chapter membership is growing rapidly. It welcomes new members, and encourages non-members to attend an event such as a Professional Development Dinner Meeting.
